Following the workshop http://www.sces.toyotariken.jp/ held in Nagoya in November 2015, this second international workshop aims at exploring the frontiers between aperiodic order and strongly correlated electron systems.

Aperiodic long range order, which encompasses incommensurately modulated structures, incommensurate composites and quasicrystals, is found in a very broad range of structures including minerals, oxide, intermetallic compounds, and also in very different systems such as charge density waves, ferroelectrics, high T-c superconductors or twisted bilayer graphene. The role of the aperiodic order, in particular for systems where electronic correlations plays an important role is still however a major open question. The recent report of a heavy fermion quasi-crystal that exhibits an unconventional quantum criticality similar to that observed in a heavy fermion periodic crystal has opened a new field.

Following this discovery, the aperiodic community has focused on studying new materials in which aperiodic order and strong correlations both appear to play an important role. This problem has also attracted interest in the community of strongly correlated electron systems where the emergence of new electronic states at proximity of a quantum critical point and heavy fermions has been a subject of active research. More generally, the coupling of the electronic properties with the lattice opens new directions of research, and has induced the emergence of new concepts and research activities such as electronic nematicity or quantum critical point in the charge density waves systems or the ferroelectrics. The incommensurability of the electronic order with the lattice can induce formation of aperiodic structures.

This three days international workshop aims at bringing together specialists of the two communities to explore the open space between aperiodic order and strong electronic correlations and promote exchange of ideas.
